Every line itemized, net profit highlighted, profit margin as a percentage of the order total.
Net profit divided by the order total. Net profit is what the buyer pays (item price plus shipping) minus everything it costs you: Etsy's transaction and payment processing fees, the listing fee, cost of goods, packaging, labor and any ad spend. A $41 order that costs $23.35 all-in nets $17.65 — a 43% profit margin.
Every dollar you spend to make and deliver that one order: raw materials and production, packaging, the value of your labor, and your average Etsy Ads spend per order. Leave off fixed costs like rent and tools — those belong in your yearly business profit, not per-order margin.
Yes, if you want an honest number. If you could hire someone for $20/hour and each order takes 15 minutes of your time, that's $5 of labor per order. Margins that look great on materials alone usually vanish once your time is priced in.
For handmade items, sellers commonly target 50%+ net margin after fees and materials; the more labor-heavy the product, the lower the sustainable margin because your time is the constraint. What matters is that the margin is positive and covers your costs — compare your own product across price points rather than chasing a universal number.
Both use the same fee engine: 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing for US orders, and the $0.20 listing fee — from Etsy's fees & payments policy (updated February 13, 2026). This calculator adds your costs of goods, packaging, labor and ads on top to get to true profit.
